CAREER
He was awarded a medical degree from the University of Tübigen in 1960, and a doctoral degree in oncology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1967. He was appointed to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1986.
Professor Blobel was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery that newly synthesized proteins contain "address tags" which direct them to the proper location within the cell. This is known as protein targeting.
Professor Blobel currently holds a position at the Rockefeller University, New York, and, since August 2001, he has been a member of the Nestlé Nutrition Council (NNC), a group of international experts who advise Nestlé on nutrition.
