Livestock woman

Nestlé Pakistan is in partnership with the United Nations Development Program to train women livestock workers in the Punjab region. The project - known as CELDAC (Community Empowerment Through Livestock Development and Credit)  - is the result of an agreement signed in September 2006. The aim is to train 4,000 women workers in primary animal healthcare.

Rural women in the region, which is one of Pakistan's main milk producing areas, are the primary livestock managers, but there is very little access to veterinary services. As well as training the women, the project also provides microfinance to enable female entrepreneurship. The project is due to run three years. The women are trained for a month, provided with medical instruments, medicines and vaccines and re-sell their services in their own villages. A little over six months in, the project has already trained more than 400 women.
