RECYCLING COFFEE GROUNDS AS FUEL: Renewable fuel from spent coffee grounds provides 13% of the total energy required at Bugalagrande factory in Colombia.

A number of projects have come on-stream in 2009 which will increase our overall proportion of energy derived from renewable resources.

For example, at our Bugalagrande factory in Colombia, the installation of our latest spent coffee grounds fuelled boiler allows the recovery of energy from this biomass. This renewable fuel provides 13% of the total energy required in the factory and has 95% lower CO2 emissions than the fossil fuel it replaces.

Nestlé has been implementing this type of technology for the last 30 years, and of our 27 coffee factories where spent grounds are a by-product, 21 are equipped with such technology.
