Sustainability at Nestlé
Environmental sustainability
Sustainability means adopting practices that help Nestlé meet the needs of the present without compromising the world’s ability to meet the needs of the future. As a company, we are committed to being a leader in environmental performance. Nestlé's commitment to sustainability is aligned with our corporate commitment to creating shared value for everyone we touch - today and tomorrow.

The Nestlé Policy on Environmental Sustainability, first published in 1991, was extensively updated in 2008 and has ensured that preserving natural resources and minimising waste have become an integral part of the day-to-day activities in all Nestlé operations worldwide. The environmental performance indicators again show continuous improvement over the course of the last decade. Verification of performance data and factual information was undertaken by Bureau Veritas and details can be found in their independent assurance statement. Nestlé’s commitment to sustainability is aligned with our corporate commitment to creating shared value for everyone we touch – today and tomorrow. Preserving natural resources and minimizing waste have become an integral part of Nestlé operations worldwide.
Our approach
Water is our top priority. Over the past 10 years the consumption of water in Nestlé manufacturing operations has decreased significantly while our production has grown. We aim to reduce the amount of water used per kilo of food and beverage we produce and to ensure that the water we discharge is clean and managed responsibly within the environment. We aim to promote and share water conservation methods with farmers and the local community.

Looking ahead

We will continue to develop and implement our approach to responsible environmental management, with a focus on:
  • Maintaining continuous improvements in our environmental performance;
  • Encouraging our business partners to apply environmental management systems based on the ISO 14001 international standard in their own operations, while at the same time achieving certification of all of our factories to ISO 14001 by 2010;
  • Communicating reliable environmental information to consumers in a meaningful and straightforward way.
