The Cocoa Plan: Nestlé and sustainable cocoa

A major focus of Nestlé’s work in improving sustainability of cocoa and coffee supply is in plant science. As a leading private researcher in the field, Nestlé has pioneered advanced technology in coffee and cocoa. Over the last 30 years, at its research centre in Tours, France, Nestlé has developed the expertise to propagate higher quality plantlets on a broad scale. The Nestlé-produced plantlets can help farmers rejuvenate their farms and increase productivity by replacing old, low-yield, disease-prone trees.
Rural Development Stories
Nestlé and sustainable cocoa and coffee
As one of the world’s biggest buyers of coffee and cocoa, Nestlé has always taken and continues to take very seriously its responsibility to ensure that these crops are produced in a sustainable manner and in a way that produces value right through the supply chain – particularly for farmers.
Fostering development in Mexico
Nestlé Mexico has invested more than 100 million pesos (CHF 8.8 million) in the Chiapa de Corzo plant, which will become the CoffeeMate coffee creamer production center. It will supply not only the Mexican, but also the Central American, South American and Caribbean markets.
Grains and legumes in Central and West Africa
Nestlé implemented a sustainable agriculture strategy to target specific priorities across Africa, designed to ensure a steady supply of raw materials. One of these priorities is reducing the high mycotoxin levels in cereals, dried fruits and edible nuts from Central and West Africa.
Fighting crop disease in West Africa.
Nestlé is creating shared value by investing in training programmes that are teaching 3,000 rural West African farmers how to bring the health and safety standards of their maise, soybeans, and cowpeas up to world-class standards.
