CEO Water Mandate

Nestlé is committed to the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate. In order to fulfil our commitment as a signatory to communicate on progress, we are reporting the following initiatives in response to the Mandate’s six elements:

Water managementCreating Shared Value and water management in direct operations
  • Nestlé factories are a major engine of new environmental quality standards
  • Nestlé invests in water treatment plants in developing countries even when there is no local legal obligation
  • Maintaining good water quality in the areas surrounding our plants has direct benefits for our business
  • The water treatment plant shown here (Shuangcheng, China) has served as a model for other treatment plants, such as a brand new one in Tema, Ghana
Water and agriculture at HenniezCreating Shared Value in supply chain and watershed management: water and agriculture at Henniez, Switzerland
  • Nestlé Waters committed to preserve the original purity of local historically significant sources, which have been used sustainably for bottling since 1905
  • More than 15 years engagement with local stakeholders for implementation of land use practices respectful of environment and local water resources
  • Goal to protect water resources while ensuring profitability of local farming practices

  • Programme is currently implemented in 50% of the recharge area of Henniez' sources
  • Aquifer hydrogeological modelling and water resources monitoring at each source to track trends of groundwater stability
  • Water used for bottling operations is collected only from existing springs, thus with rates compatible with natural replenishment
Water and sanitation in Côte d'IvoireCreating Shared Value and community engagement in water projects: water and sanitation for 50 000 people in Côte d’Ivoire
  • Development Partnership with the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Ivorian Red Cross
  • Rehabilitation of 50 deep well village pumps
  • Establishment of community water users’ committees for long-term pump management
  • Construction of 8 hygiene blocks in semi-urban areas of high sanitation risk
  • Training of local Red Cross branches to oversee water pumps and manage toilets
  • Participatory Hygiene and Sanitary Transformation (PHAST) training for all communities involved

  • Promoting water as a top agenda item at Davos (World Economic Forum)
  • Signatory and active supporter of the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate
  • World renowned water experts on Advisory Board guiding Nestlé's Creating Shared Value strategy
  • Engaging in McKinsey's Water Resource Security study; and in the Water Footprint Network

  • Since 1999, Nestlé has increased its food production volume by 68%. Over the same period we have reduced our water withdrawal by 58% per tonne of product
  • We aim to achieve a further water efficiency improvement of at least 10% over the next 5 years
Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared ValueCreating Shared Value and Collective Action in respect of the Global Water Crisis: The Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value
  • The Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value will be awarded every other year starting 2010
  • It will be awarded to an individual, NGO or business
  • The prize honours an outstanding innovation to improve rural development, nutrition, access to clean water, or having a significant impact on water management

  • Prize Laureate receives scale-up investment of up to CHF 500 000
