Saving water through improved irrigation, Vietnam

Through a train-the-trainer project sponsored by Nestlé, Vietnamese farmers are learning that they can increase the quality of their coffee yields by using less water. They are also reducing their dependence on the boom and bust cycles of the global coffee market by diversifying their crops and creating small enterprises.

Screening for plant characteristics related to water-efficiency has only recently started in a few organizations, in particular in Brazil and Ethiopia. Coffee plant collections of different characteristics are fragmented throughout many organisations and it is unclear, which organisation has the most promising varieties.
Improving water use in coffee production, Mexico
A key step in coffee production is the treatment process to extract coffee beans. Often unnecessary amounts of water are consumed. To improve water management in local coffee production, Nestlé Mexico launched an “Ecological Milling” initiative.
Partnership with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
In 2003, Nestlé began a partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to address the water needs of more than 200,000 Somali refugees and local people in Eastern Ethiopia.
