Nestlé Dominicana has sent its first truckload of food to earthquake-stricken Haiti. Valued at around US $25,000-$30,000, the food was passed to the World Vision charity for distribution to the affected areas.

Thursday 14 January
Nestlé in the Dominican Republic had pledged to supply US $150,000 of food products and a further US $100,000 in cash following the earthquake which hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, 12 January.

The 7.0-magnitude quake – which struck about 15km (10 miles) south-west of Port-au-Prince – has caused thousands of deaths and extensive structural damage.

Products including Supligen, a liquid meal supplement, and milk were earmarked for supply to support the disaster relief efforts and communities affected by the earthquake.  Nestlé had further pledged to donate US $1 million in bottled water, and is working with aid organisations to ensure the bottled water urgently reaches those most in need.

Nestlé, which has had a strong presence in Haiti for over 50 years, also set up a crisis committee at its headquarters in Vevey, Switzerland. The committee will monitor the situation to coordinate the Nestlé response.

On an individual level, Nestlé employees from different countries have contributed to the aid effort. Nestlé Dominicana will work with local aid organisations to decide on the distribution.  Employees in the Dominican Republic also came forward to donate blood.
