Before I took maternity leave I was employed at a day care for school aged children. Once, while waiting at the playground for the bell to go inside one of the other moms noticed my protruding belly and jumped immediately to the dreaded subject of status. "So what does your husband do for a living?". I thought about lying and making my life seem socially correct, but I decided against it. "I'm not married, actually" I replied. The look on her face was somewhat repulsive, however I felt somehow empowered by my bold response. Being a single mom doesn't mean that I am a charity case, nor does it entail any sort of hardship. I am doing very well, as are many other single parents I know of, male and female. We work very hard to support and make time for our families because broken or not, we are still a family. I myself was raised in a home by one very powerful woman who is no longer a mystery to me. I understand and am ever more grateful to my own mother for teaching me the value of independance and love in our home. Whether a parent is single or married, the very idea of coping in a situation on your own is a good one to know and teach, just in case one day you or your child has to do it.
