Turning off the TV

Girls playingTelevision and video games are becoming ever more popular among kids of all ages, and parents, teachers and other experts have opinions about how much is too much.

Some experts say that watching too much television and playing too many video games may interfere with kids’ psychological development. They also say that this form of technology might result in a lack of self-control and inattentiveness in the classroom.

On the opposing side, there are many experts who believe some television programs and video games have significant educational value. They can stimulate learning and increase coordination.

So, who is right? Experts say it’s not a question of right or wrong. It’s all about balance and moderation. If your kids are spending too much time in front of the tube, try some of these alternatives to foster development and stimulate the mind.

Play a word association game
Everyone starts with 10 points. Someone thinks of a word and the next person needs to think of a related word; cloud, sky, airplane etc. This goes around the group until someone hesitates, says an unrelated word or laughs too much to continue.  The you start again with a new word.

Play the abbreviation game
Someone says two letters - for example FM. Then take turns making up what the letters could be an abbreviation for. Encourage your child to be creative. Examples include: Fairly Muddy, Furry Mouse, Fat Munchkin. Play until there are no more ideas or until a time limit you choose has passed.

Play skittles
You can set up an indoor skittles alley in your home or garden with some empty plastic bottles and a ball. Take it turns to see how many you can knock over. Give an extra special cheer for anyone who manages to score a strike!

When playing any of these games it is important to remember it is the time together that counts and not the winning or losing.
