As my mother left for her bridge game, I casually mentioned that today was the day I was going to teach myself to bake. I was all of 12 years old and determined to make a chocolate biscuit recipe, I think my mother consoled herself in the fact that it was a fridge recipe and that I wouldn't need the oven. However, it said melt the butter and add the 2 eggs. So that's what I did, I melted the butter on the stove and as it started to bubble I added the eggs. I was suprised when they started to fry and I knew it didn't look right. I decided to wait for mom to come home. To make it worse, our home finances were not in the best shape so wasting food was quite costly, but my mom never discouraged me from trying.
