Rock Candy

When I was a child I remember my mother making what she called rock candy. I can't remember all of it, except she used water and a lot of sugar and boiled it. Then she would sterilized a large empty mayonnaise jar, then cut several pieces of chord or what she called kitchen string. She placed the strings in the jar, taping one end to the outside of the jar, then she poured in the hot mixture. It would cool, and as it cooled crystals would form on the string, and when enough crystals form, we had a string of candy. This use to amaze me. I'd love to share this with my 2 daughters, which so far I have only failed at, and wasted a lot of sugar, and nothing happens.
