Dogs Behaviours
Here are some basic recommandations to follow around a dog. Just like us, there are certain "social" rules to respect to avoid any conflicts.
Living with a dog:
- Let dogs eat their meals and chew on bones without interruption.
- Don’t wake a dog suddenly; this may give the dog a fright and trigger an aggressive response.
- Don’t interfere with a mother's new litter, especially in the first couple of weeks and when her pups are feeding.
- Don’t corner a dog; this can provoke a ‘fight or flight’ response.
Managing a dog with kids:
- Always supervise children under the age of five with a dog; never leave them alone together.
- Keep children and dogs apart in excitable environments, such as parties.
- Don't cuddle dogs face to face; it may represent a threat.
Patting a dog:
- Never pat a dog you don't know, especially one that is tethered (i.e. outside a shop) as it may bite if it feels cornered.
- Always ask permission from an owner before patting their dog.
- When greeting a dog, extend the back of your hand for the dog to sniff.
