We would like you to take a survey about Research & Development
Food and Nutrition Communication
Sugar
This issue examines the role of sugar. Are we "addicted" to sugar? Mounting evidence that over consumption of fructose, especially high fructose corn syrup can increase your risk of becoming fat and damage your health
Nutrition and Cancer
This edition provides background to the disease, and internationally approved recommendations on how best to reduce risks, principally in the field of nutrition
Nutritient Density
How can we get optimal nutrition without putting on weight? How can we lose weight without being deficient in some essential nutrient? The concept of Nutrient Density is our guide to which foods to choose.
How good is your eyesight?
By the age of 65, one in three people have some form of eye disease. In many cases, blindness and vision loss are preventable. In this edition we take a basic look at how the eye works, describe the principal eye diseases and conditions and show how good nutrition can play a role in preserving our capital of healthy eyesight.
Vitamin intakes
As Nestlé makes its brands available to a wider segment of consumers with its range of PPPs, special attention is being given to best-value vitamin, mineral and macronutrient content in these products. The lower prices will not be at the expense of good nutritional composition. As well as outlining vitamin deficiency diseases, this edition also features an overview of secondary plant substances, with a special focus on carotenoids.
Nutrition and the Brain
In the special edition "Nutrition and the Brain" B-Well takes a look at whether nutrition can influence brain development and performance, and whether there is anything we can do to limit the functional decline that comes with age. This edition also highlights the international symposium on the same topic held at the Nestlé Research Centre.
Good Food for Healthy Ageing
Many studies have shown that a high proportion of institutionalised older people are not getting a properly balanced diet, and many are not even getting the recommended number of calories. B-Well's publication Food and Nutrition Communication looks at why this happens, and examines the differing needs of the older adult population from the still dynamic 60+ people to the more frail 80" age groups.
The Whole Grain
The title "The Whole Grain - greater than the sum of its parts" was chosen to show the synergistic effect of all the nutritional components of Whole Grain cereals. The publication gives statistical evidence of the beneficial effect of whole grains for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, for weight management, and a variety of other conditions. This series of publications also provides useful public relations materials to make available at nutrition conferences and congresses in several markets.
Healthy skin
Good nutrition is important for good skin, and a healthy skin is a sign of wellness. Nestlé has two joint ventures with L'Oréal - Galderma and Innéov, and related research at the Nestlé Research Center, so it seemed interesting to bring these elements together for an edition in which we explore ways to keep the skin as healthy as possible and describe some of the skin conditions that require specialist treatment.
The Metabolic syndrome
This edition describes the Metabolic Syndrome, a collection of health conditions including excessive fat around the waistline, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and low HDL cholesterol, which together significantly increase the risk of Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. The topic follows on from the first edition, January 2006, on Obesity, as these factors are contributing to a pandemic of Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Diabetes, in particular, is expected to affect about 333 million people by the year 2025, putting unbearable pressure on health care systems to cope with it worldwide. There will be a challenge for the foods industry to provide a choice of foods which cater for diabetics.
Obesity
Obesity – the Other Global Energy Crisis" . This edition draws attention to the complexity of the problem - there is no real "cure" for severe obesity once it is established - and the spectacular rate of development of this condition to pandemic levels.
