Major programmes include partnerships with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Search for Common Ground and others. Please read about the activities of these and others below.
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)
Nestlé’s primary contribution to the fight against HIV and AIDS is to support global and national initiatives to reduce the spread of infection and minimize its impact. Nestlé S.A. supported the African Health Initiative 2010 (ARCHI 2010) initiated by the International Federation of Red Cross Society with a financial contribution of CHF 3 million in 2002 for a focused HIV/AIDS peer education programme in Nigeria. To further promote healthy lifestyle and improve knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, Nestlé Nigeria collaborated with the Nigerian Red Cross Society to produce informational, educational and communication materials such as brochures and posters published in three major Nigerian languages: Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. About 150,000 copies of the brochure were donated to the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Nestlé partnership with the Red Cross has contributed immensely to the reduction of HIV/AIDS prevalence in Nigeria through strategic focus on Peer Education, Home Based Care, Counselling, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-stigmatization campaigns.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Search for Common Ground (UNHCR)
In late 2003, Nestlé and UNHCR began a partnership focusing on the refugee relief activity of water delivery and on improving the humanitarian organization’s capacity to monitor water exploitation. Nestlé is contributing financial resources and technical expertise under this partnership, initially focusing on Ethiopia, a country that has endured severe water scarcity in recent decades. With the influx of refugees in the 1980s (numbering some 600,000 at the high point), managing water consumption presented particular challenges to UNHCR over the years. Today, UNHCR targets both refugees and returnees and is phasing out support as the remaining refugees are heading home. A key issue in the context of UNHCR’s final years of presence in Ethiopia is to hand over the water infrastructure to the local community for their future benefit. Nestlé's technical support is particuarly timely as UNHCR transfers these valuable assets to the local host population.
Africa Conflict Resolution at the Clinton Global Initiative
The non-govermmental organisation, Common Ground Productions and Nestlé Nigeria joined forces to produce two ground-breaking TV series for a mass Nigerian audience in order to promote positive role models and peaceful resolution of conflict. The shows, one is a reality TV series and the second is a drama series were presented at the Clinton Global Initiative. The first tells the story of 20 young Nigerians from various ethnic, religious, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds who participate in an intensive 4-week acting and conflict resolution training programme. “We chose to work with Nestlé because other companies just pay lip service, but Nestlé are really engaged and involved in the community.” John Marks, President of Common Ground Productions. At the conference, President Clinton acknowledged the partnership as a practical example of NGO-private sector collaboration that can challenge social issues, such as religious and ethnic tolerance.
