Returning cleaned water to the ecosystem
Our first objective is to minimize the volume of water used in our operations. Secondly, we continue to invest in plants to treat water after it has been used in manufacturing, returning cleaned water to the ecosystem. We decrease the organic burden to the environment by treating water to remove the vast majority of organic pollutants.
At the Gerber baby food factory in Fremont, Michigan, USA water used in primary plant processes (such as washing raw materials, pictured) is recycled for secondary uses (for example, washing floor drains). It is then piped 4 miles down the road to the Gerber 450 acre farm to irrigate crops that are grown to produce animal feed for local farmers.
ORGANIC LOAD REMOVED: Treated water leaving Nestlé factories is returned cleaned to the ecosystem, containing reduced levels of COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand, or organic pollution in water) after purification in Nestlé plants.
