Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) - Industry collaboration
In 2002, Nestlé was instrumental in establishing a food industry-wide Sustainable Agricultural Initiative (SAI)
together with Group Danone and Unilever. The founding members of SAI have defined Sustainable Agriculture as
“a productive, competitive and efficient way to produce agricultural products, while at the same time protecting
and improving the natural environment and socio-economic conditions of local communities”. Today SAI has more
than 20 company members that pursue the SAI objectives to support development and implementation of
internationally-accepted principles and standards for sustainable agriculture by:
- sharing knowledge and expertise among all stakeholders of the food chain
- supporting research programs and other related local and international activities
- communicating with key opinion formers to ensure alignment of best agricultural practices with agriculture policymaking, as well as mainstream consumer concerns.
