Emissions reductions in our transportation by sea - USA
Nestlé Waters has also reduced emissions in sea transportation. For example, sea-freight containers to the USA transport two of Nestlé’s international brands, Perrier and San Pellegrino. Before 2005, the maximum payload for these containers was 20 tonnes as this is the maximum weight that trucks at the point of arrival are able to carry. To align the arrival of heavy-load containers with weight-limited road transportation, Nestlé Waters now uses warehouses at the port to divide the containers into separate loads. These heavy-load containers are now able to transport 24 tonnes of product, thanks to the introduction of new palletisation and loading patterns. The results are promising: as of today, Perrier and San Pellegrino require 406 and 436 less trips, respectively per year, and Nestlé Waters’ carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by 14 % along this transport route.
