Partnerships for sustainable sourcing of green coffee – Ethiopia

Working through local sourcing and export companies, Nestlé helped the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (OCFCU) in the Yirgacheffe area to properly set-up and manage new efficient and water-saving pulpers (to remove the hull from the beans). As the donation of the pulpers from USA did not include either assistance for setting up the machines or training, Nestlé’s help was appreciated by the 3’100 coffee farmers. The pulp is composted in cemented tanks, and the waste water directed to 3 lagoons for sedimentation and re-use for irrigation. Additionally, Nestlé helped build new school rooms and to set up a potable water supply in the villages of some of the cooperatives.
