Tracking workplace injuries: Five-year evolution
Nestlé started tracking injuries that lead to days away from work and/or to medical treatment at corporate level in 1998. This tracking covers approximately 275,000 employees and 50,000 contractors (those that work at Nestlé sites) across the world. Since then, significant progress has been achieved. In the period 2003-2007, the number of injuries with time away from work (for employees and contractors) per million hours worked reduced by 65%.

Preventing fatalities
Fatal accidents cause pain and sorrow to the Nestlé organization through the victim’s family, friends and colleagues. Therefore, our first priority is to prevent the most serious accidents by eliminating their root causes after thorough incident investigation.

Despite our best efforts, in 2007, sadly, we still had to report 15 work-related fatalities: 11 employees – 8 of which died in traffic or transportation accidents – and 4 contractors.
