What are you doing to ensure suppliers meet animal welfare standards?

While we don’t raise animals as part of our operations, Nestlé is a leading global buyer of milk. We also source meat, fish, poultry and eggs for a wide range of products, but to a much lesser extent. We have decided to map out animal care, health and welfare practices in our global dairy, beef, pork, fish, poultry and eggs supply chains to identify where we need to focus our efforts to help improve farm animal welfare.

We already require our suppliers of animal-based ingredients to meet all applicable government regulations on farm animal welfare including handling, housing, nutrition, veterinary treatment transportation and slaughter. Our key suppliers of animal-based products go through Responsible Sourcing Audits by independent third party firms to ensure compliance with all local laws, including animal welfare legislation.

Putting mechanisms in place to trace the origins of animal-derived products is an important step in promoting farm animal welfare in countries that don’t have such legislation. We are committed to working with our suppliers in these countries to help them trace animal-derived products back to the farm level with a view to developing awareness of farm animal welfare and improving practices in line with our approach to responsible sourcing.
