Nestlé attends deforestation event to promote sustainable supply chains

DEFORESTATION: Nestlé's commitment on no-deforestation states that its products will not be associated with deforestation.

Nestlé Brazil is participating in the Forest Trends Katoomba event: ‘Scaling Up Sustainable Commodity Supply Chains’, taking place at Iguazu Falls in the heart of the Brazilian rainforest.

The two-day meeting brings together stakeholders to identify the challenges of sustainable production, particularly within cattle and soy value-chains, to discuss potential solutions, and share success stories.

As Nestlé has committed to work towards making responsible sourcing a reality across all its supply chains, something it is acutely aware it cannot do alone, the Katoomba event is an important opportunity for the company to share knowledge and engage with like-minded corporations, policy makers, financial institutions, deforestation experts and civil society organizations.

Creating Shared Value

During the meeting, José Lopez, Nestlé’s Executive Vice-President for Operations, shared how Nestlé is introducing traceability and transparency at every stage of its operations as part of its Creating Shared Value approach, which seeks to deliver long-term shareholder value while at the same time benefiting society.

He also explained what Nestlé is doing, and plans to do, to eliminate deforestation and the loss of areas of high value conservation from its supply chains, including soya.

Nestlé recently shared 35 commitments to society, covering nutrition, water, rural development, sustainability and compliance, in its Nestlé in Society report 2013. Many of the commitments are linked to responsible sourcing and supply chains. They reflect Nestlé’s desire to look for opportunities for external engagement and collective action to ensure that in meeting the needs of today, we do not undermine the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
