The Nestlé Nutrition Institute hosts symposium for geriatricians

Dec 21, 2012
SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM: Leading experts examined the evidence showing the synergistic relationship between resistance exercise and supplemental nutrition in the elderly.

The Nestlé Nutrition Institute held a satellite symposium at the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS) congress, in Brussels on 27 September 2012. Leading experts reviewed research showing how exercise and nutrition can have a positive impact on muscle performance in the elderly.

Ageing is associated with a loss of muscle mass and muscle strength. This can reduce people’s mobility and independence, thereby reducing quality of life. This symposium highlighted the importance of resistance exercise and the right nutrition for older people. The delegates heard how protein supplementation, in particular whey protein, can help to reduce muscle loss with ageing.
