Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla from Lithuania has won the third annual ‘Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award.

The award was created in 2010 by Nestlé and the organisers of the Salzburg Festival website to develop the careers of highly talented young conductors.

It is open to young people aged between 22 and 35. It includes a prize of EUR 15,000 and the opportunity to conduct a concert with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Salzburg’s famous ‘Felsenreitschule’ music hall.

International jury

26-year-old Ms Gražinyte-Tyla was one of three finalists selected from more than 90 applicants by an international jury.

She had to conduct the world-renowned Camerata Salzburg chamber orchestra in front of an audience and the jury in the Felsenreitschule in April.

“It was a very close decision,” said conductor Ingo Metzmacher, who chaired the jury. “In the end, her greater decisiveness and clarity carried the day.”

Winner’s concert

Ms Gražinyte-Tyla will now conduct the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra at the Felsenreitschule on August 12 this year.

“It is a great joy to win the ‘Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors’ Award,” she said.

“It’s an honour to prepare a concert with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and to have a presence as a conductor at the Salzburg Festival,” she added.
