Teaming up for climate advocacy

Landscape

There’s strength in numbers. We work with many different partners to undertake climate advocacy and make a positive difference.

This forms a critical part of delivering against our Net Zero Roadmap, helping to create the right frameworks and conditions for efforts to reduce emissions.

All of Nestlé’s advocacy activities on climate align with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. This includes our work related to multi-stakeholder and business-only coalitions and trade associations.

We provide specific guidance to our local market teams on aligning advocacy and external engagement activities with the goals of the Paris Agreement, applying our Policy on Transparent Interactions with Public Authorities (pdf, 2Mb).

Disclosure of our advocacy practices is important to enhance transparency and trust. That is why we welcome the development of the Global Standard on Climate Responsible Lobbying and use it to guide our annual Nestlé Climate Advocacy Industry Associations Review disclosure. This includes:

  • Our advocacy priorities on climate
  • Nestlé S.A.’s main industry association memberships and an assessment of how far their positions are aligned with the objectives of the Paris Agreement
  • Our process for addressing misalignments
  • Nestlé’s climate legislative advocacy guidance that helps equip our teams
  • Our governance structure for climate advocacy activities
  • Links to other public disclosures of Nestlé’s climate advocacy activities
  • Examples of Nestlé’s global and regional climate advocacy activities

In 2023, Nestlé was recognized as a leading company meeting all relevant criteria as part of the Corporate Climate Policy Engagement Leader assessment carried out by InfluenceMap.

Setting a clear agenda on climate

As set out in Nestlé's Net Zero Roadmap (pdf, 8Mb), we will continue to advocate for ambitious government policies and private-sector leadership to ensure all sectors move more quickly towards rapid and sustained reductions in carbon emissions.

Our advocacy priorities:
• Encouraging more regenerative forms of agricultural production
• Ending deforestation risk and supporting forest positive restoration
• Enabling more sustainable logistics
• Supporting the rollout of renewable electricity and energy
• Improving consumer communications and claims
• Advocating for higher ambitions from countries and companies and fair and clear rules for target setting and reporting progress

In addition, Nestlé supports various multi-sector efforts aimed at increasing the pace of decarbonization at a multi-lateral and national level.

Combatting climate change is a team effort

  • WBCSD (World Business Council For Sustainable Devlopment)
Nestlé participates in several working groups, including those dedicated to climate change.
  • Business and Industry NGOs (BINGO)
Nestlé is an active member of this UNFCCC constituency and participates via our membership of the International Chamber of Commerce.
  • COP28: UAE
Nestlé advocated for an acceleration of efforts by all stakeholders to keep the 1.5°C pathway of the Paris Agreement within reach, recognizing the role of sustainable food systems in helping achieve this.

Examples of our advocacy activities

Nestlé is active in progressive climate advocacy on an international, regional and local basis.

On a global level, activities include:

  • Participating in the first private sector panel to be held at the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF 18) to show how food and agriculture companies can contribute to achieving the UN's Global Forest Goals.
  • Signing a call to action for the urgent adoption of an ambitious and legally-binding EU Nature Restoration Law. Nestlé also advocated in support of the EU Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law.
  • Multiple engagement points during Climate Week in New York and London Climate Action Week.
  • Supporting the Emirates Declaration on Resilient Food Systems, Sustainable Agriculture, and Climate Action at COP28.
  • Adding our name to Calls to Action by the World Economic Forum and the We Mean Business Coalition for the world to fast track the transition to renewables and take other policy measures to speed up climate action.
  • Helping co-create the COP28 Action Agenda on Regenerative Landscapes.
  • At COP28 we supported the launch of the First Movers Coalition 4 Food and the Dairy Methane Action Alliance. We also signed the “Transformation is Unstoppable” call to action for a more ambitious negotiations outcome at COP28.
  • SAI Platform: Co-founder of the industry outcome-based framework called Regenerating Together to scale regenerative agriculture around the globe. The tool was co-developed with peers and is being tested with farmer cooperatives around the world.
