The history of Pro Plan
1986
Pro Plan is born
Pro Plan launched in the US, using a new manufacturing process developed in-house at Purina allowing real meat to be the #1 ingredient. PURINA Pro Plan was also the first brand to be exclusively sold at independent pet stores, pet superstores, feed stores and veterinarians.
1990
The Pro Plan range grows
Pro Plan created a wide range of formulas to provide nutrition solutions for different life stages, breed sizes, and special needs throughout the 1990s and 2000s Pro Plan continues to innovate by adding new proteins as the #1 ingredient, including turkey, beef, lamb and salmon.
1995
Pro Plan's geographic expansion
Pro Plan expanded outside of the US to regions across the globe including Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia.
2000s
Linking science and nutrition
Pro Plan introduces new products based on PURINA's extensive nutritional research including molecular nutrition. Scientific advancements include adding DHA and omega-3 fatty acids to puppy formulas to promote brain health, unique formulations to meet the specific nutritional needs of indoor cats, and renovations to the Performance line to improve dogs' strength and endurance.

Best in Show
Pro Plan becomes the official pet food sponsor of the Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show. Since 1948, the Dog Show is the longest nationally televised live dog show.

PURINA Veterinary Diets joins with PURINA Pro Plan
PURINA Veterinary Diets was officially renamed to Pro Plan Veterinary Diets.

Pro Plan Bright Mind
Using a blend of enhanced botanical oils and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), PURINA Pro Plan Bright Mind is a special formula designed to improve older dogs' cognitive health and quality of life. This breakthrough is followed in 2017 with Pro Plan Prime Plus, another innovative formula that improves and extends the lives of cats.
