Our R&D organization

Research and Development office

Nestlé's Research and Development organization is the largest in the food and beverage industry. We have over 4,100 employees working at 23 sites worldwide.

Our R&D organization encompasses Nestlé Research, which works on cross-category, fundamental research, and our wider Nestlé R&D organization dedicated to category-focused product and systems development. Discover how we're pushing the boundaries of science to provide innovative products and services for people and pets everywhere.

Fundamental research

Nestlé Research provides the scientific foundation for our innovations. We work across all product categories globally, from food safety, basic nutrition and health research through to applied research for product development and packaging.

Our sites in Vers-chez-les-Blanc and EPFL Innovation Park in Lausanne, Switzerland, house five research institutes: Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences, Nestlé Institute of Food Safety & Analytical Sciences, Nestlé Institute of Food Sciences, Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences and Nestlé Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

Announced in February 2022, the recently inaugurated Agricultural Sciences institute focuses on the areas of plant science, dairy livestock and agricultural systems science. It includes our plant science research hub in Tours, France, as well as a global network of research farms.

Alongside our five institutes, Vers-chez-les-Blanc houses a Clinical Research Unit, which centralizes the management of Nestlé's clinical trials. Nestlé Research in Switzerland is supported by a research hub in Singapore, focusing on maternal and infant nutrition, plus a Nestlé Purina Petcare research unit in St. Louis, Missouri, United States.

Category-focused product development

Our cross-category research is complemented by Nestlé Product and Technology Centers (NPTCs). At these centers, our scientific discoveries are translated into products and technologies for a variety of categories. These are: coffee, confectionery, dairy, food, nutrition, pet care, ice cream, solutions for out-of-home, health science and waters.

Our regional innovation centers in China, India, Africa, Southeast Asia, and now, Latin America, also work to develop products for local needs, as part of their local innovation ecosystems.

Systems development

The Nestlé System Technology Center in Orbe, Switzerland draws on over 30 years expertise in machines, packaging and products for in and out of home.

Recent systems developed here include Nescafé Dolce Gusto Neo, which uses home compostable pods, and Nespresso Vertuo Pop. Plus, Roastelier, our compact coffee-roasting solution for out of home.
