Entity Slider

An Entity Slider displays a carousel of images with text. This component can be used for both content and discoverability purposes. There are a number of different variants of this component, two of which are more suited to discoverability: Entity Slider (Banner) and Entity Slider (Caption Right). Other variants are included in the Entity Slider page in the Content section of this guide.

When to use

Entity Slider (Banner)

This component is typically used as a page header on key top level pages where there is regular fresh content that needs to be added, for example:

  • The homepage is frequently updated with topical stories, press releases or news
  • The top level Innovation page has regular updates on new innovations from different areas of the business

Where the content is important and isn’t going to be regularly updated, it would be better to just include that content within the page and not within a Slider.

Entity Slider (Caption Right)

This component is typically used where there are a number of relevant related pages to link off to, with accompanying information to give context to the user, but this is only one section within a larger page. In a situation like this, we could have three choices:

  1. Add it into the page as separate sections - this isn’t recommended as this could make the page very long and makes it difficult for users to skim
  2. Create a new sub-page to house these links - in some instances this might make sense, but the information might be better situated in the wider context, in which case we don’t want to create a separate sub-page
  3. Use a slider

How to use

Main considerations when using this component:

  • You can have as many items as you need in a slider, however the more items you have, the less likely a user is to view them, so we should try to limit the number of items and not have important information on a later slide that a user won’t see.
  • Where appropriate we can inject some additional personality with color on the Entity Slider (Caption Right) component, but we should be mindful of the visual hierarchy
  • The auto-slide option on this component is not recommended for use

Additional considerations

  • Recommended number of items in carousel: 3-5
  • Recommended title length (Entity Slider Banner): 10 - 20 characters (max. 35)
  • Recommended sub-title length (Entity Slider Banner): 40 - 60 characters (max. 90)
  • Recommended text length (Entity Slider Caption Right): 350 characters max., including title
  • Recommended image size (Entity Slider Banner): 1920 x 630 pixels
  • Recommended small media image size (Entity Slider Banner): 480 x 270 pixels
