UN Global Compact
The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is a strategic policy initiative for businesses committed to aligning their operations and strategies with 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. Our own Corporate Business Principles incorporate the 10 UNGC Principles and we reflect the basic concepts of fairness, honesty and respect for people and the environment in our business actions.
Our communication on progress
As a participant in the UNGC, we disclose our progress on the implementation of the 10 Principles and the activities we are carrying out in support of the 2030 development agenda.
Our Communication on Progress increases transparency and accountability, pushes us to continue to improve on our performance and ensures that UNGC signatory companies live up to the expectations set by the Compact and the United Nations.
Announced at UN Headquarters in New York at the start of the 2918 UN General Assembly week, Nestlé was reconfirmed as a Global Compact LEAD company. We have demonstrated our commitment to the UN Global Compact by sharing best practices and providing leadership in activities that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Each year Nestlé reports on its progress towards the UN Global Compact ten principles.
In 2018, we continued to play an active role in initiatives advancing specific key parts of the 2030 development agenda by participating in several UN Global Compact activities:
UNGC Action Platforms
- During the 2018 UN General Assembly week, we helped to launch the Action Platform for Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions for SDG 16. The Action Platform is a two-year program bringing together business, Governments, civil society and UN agencies to combine their efforts towards achieving a peaceful and inclusive society for sustainable development, the provision of justice for all, and effective and accountable institutions at all levels.
- With the UN Global Compact’s Health is Everyone’s Business Action Platform we are convening a broad coalition of leading businesses, UN, academic and civil society partners to set a global business agenda for SDG 3 and make good health for all a corporate goal. Participants will get the opportunity to provide input to a Framework for Business Action on SDG 3 that the UN Global Compact will make available to its 13 000 signatories. The Framework will support a principled approach for how business can take action to improve their positive health and wellbeing imprint in the workplace, market place and community. We participated in the United Nations Global Compact Action Platform on Decent Work in Global Supply Chains. This platform is building the case for improving decent work in global supply chains and demonstrate how labor rights and human rights are critical for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UN Global Compact local networks
Nestlé engages with the local networks that the UNGC has established around the world, to help action global commitments and ambitions at ground level and enable progress by instigating collective action at the country level. We are pleased to share the continuously deeper and insightful work our markets are carrying out in key areas.
In 2018, nine markets participated in their respective local networks either through participating in conferences and events or through active involvement in specific working groups. The Global Compact Network Pakistan awarded Nestlé Pakistan first place for ‘Living the Global Compact Business Sustainability Award 2018,’ in the multi-national category.
