Nestlé Waters has opened Switzerland’s largest agricultural biogas production facility. The Valbroye plant will use 25,000 tonnes of manure from local cows to generate renewable energy for the nearby Henniez bottled water plant.
The facility will also generate electricity for the Swiss power grid – enough to power more than 1,000 households annually. Once it has been processed, the manure can be used by local farmers as a natural fertilizer.
By using the manure, the site will reduce CO2 emissions by 1,750 tonnes per year. It will also recycle used coffee grounds from Nescafé and Nespresso production sites in Switzerland to produce biogas.
Using the heat generated, the Henniez plant will increase its overall use of renewable energy to more than 50 percent.
