Coffee Watch has published a report ‘Forest in the Coffee Cup - Why We Need Clear Rules for the Coffee Supply Chain’ by the German Environmental Aid Association, which mentions Nestlé. What is your response?
We support the report’s call for clear, binding, and stable regulatory frameworks governing environmental and human rights due diligence. From the outset, we have supported both the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act and the relevant EU regulations, and we have invested in the necessary compliance systems. We agree that to drive systemic change, we need all stakeholders to play their part.
Nestlé has robust, globally established processes in place to uphold human rights due diligence and responsible sourcing. These include comprehensive risk assessments, clear supplier requirements, independent audits along the supply chain, and mechanisms to promptly investigate reported concerns. Our decade-long sustainability programs support smallholder farmers increase their long-term resilience through regenerative agriculture, helping them increase higher farm productivity and income, while protecting the environment and biodiversity.
Coffee Watch have made a series of allegations related to human rights violations in your coffee supply chain, and Nespresso and Nescafé. What is your response?
We take these allegations very seriously, which are not in line with our high standards.
We duly investigated each situation referred to by this NGO at the time each report was released. We confirm that Nestlé was either not directly linked to the farms in question or has since ended a relationship with a supplier due to a failure to meet our standards.
Nestlé has robust human rights due diligence processes in place regarding the sourcing of our ingredients, to ensure we comply with all applicable legal requirements, international standards and our Responsible Sourcing Core Requirements. When we learn of concerns related to our supply chain, we duly investigate and work with our direct suppliers to take swift action where necessary, including ending the supplier relationship in cases where our standards are not met.
